We’re referring to the Santa Fe Indian Market, the 98th edition of which takes place Saturday, August 17th and Sunday, August 18thwith the usual marvelous leadup of Indian Market Week beforehand. Don’t miss this truly special combination juried art show/cultural festival, which draws some 150,000 visitors every year from all around the globe.
The 2019 Santa Fe Indian Market
Presented by the Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (SWAIA), the Santa Fe Indian Market is, in the non-profit’s words, “the largest and most prestigious juried Native arts show in the world and the largest cultural event in the Southwest.”
More than 1,100 Native/First Nations artists from better than 220 tribes across the U.S. and Canada come to Santa Fe for the occasion. The historic Santa Fe Plaza, within shouting distance of our resort, hosts 700-plus vendor booths featuring superb jewelry, paintings, sculptures, carvings, beadwork, pottery, and other Native art and offering the chance to chat directly with their skilled creators. You can peruse the full list of exhibitors here and learn about the 2019 Market’s Featured Artists here.
On the eve of the Market, on Friday, August 16th, you can nab a preview of the prestigious Best in Show award-winning art from 6 to 8 PM.
A smorgasbord of both traditional and contemporary Native foods will be served during the festival, which will also feature music at the Plaza Stage and the always-popular, all-ages Native American Clothing Contest on Sunday morning.
On Saturday evening, the Indian Market Gala always draws a crowd to the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. This year’s theme is RISE & REMEMBER: Honoring the Resilience of Native Women.
Indian Market Week Highlights
The weekend art show is the culmination of a week’s worth of multifaceted celebration of Native art, literature, filmmaking, and more. Indian Market Week includes the free screenings of the Native Cinema Showcase, a partnership with the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian that takes place at the New Mexico History Museum (113 Lincoln Ave). Among the films featured in this year’s Native Cinema Showcase are Warrior Women (Tuesday, August 13th at 7 PM), a documentary profile of the Lakota community organizer and activist Madonna Thunder Hawk; Falls Around Her (Wednesday, August 14th at 7 PM), which features the great Tantoo Cardinal as a high-profile Anishinaabe musician who comes home to her reserve for a recharge; and N. Scott Momaday: Words From a Bear (Thursday, August 15th at 7 PM), celebrating the life and work of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Kiowa author.
