Northern New Mexico has a special beauty. For American artist, Sally Delap-John, it is a personal heart-felt connection. She lives in the high mountain village of Truchas, New Mexico that has an elevation of over 8000 feet. The artist sees “a picture around every corner”.
This part of New Mexico is the primary focus for Sally Delap-John’s latest work. It is this seemingly magical setting that inspires her work, primarily en plein air. Delap-John is constantly seeking that special combination of composition, revealed through age-old adobes or landscapes of rock and sagebrush with incredible light.
When discussing her working conditions, the artist says, “Plein air painting is a form of adventure. Finding the perfect location, by composition alone, doesn’t account for the other factors of painting outdoors. The weather elements can be a blessing or a curse…too hot… too cold… too windy. Animal life also heightens the experience. In Northern New Mexico, unleashed dogs are ever present, as are coyotes, snakes, and insects. It seems that every inch of land belongs to someone. After centuries of losing acreage through one form or other, property owners can be quite possessive when someone paints on their land. Still, painting outdoors on location is the way I love to work.”
We are thrilled to have the jewel-toned oil paintings of Sally Delap-John in our Gallery Collection at La Posada. Like all of the other art that is featured in this historic setting, Delap-John’s work is original and available for sale at the artist’s studio prices. The hotel does not mark up the work.
